Ghana, one day at a time.
How long the drive to Cape Coast really takes. Which Mole trip walks you up to the elephants. What a naming ceremony involves before you agree to one. Every tour in Ghana, reviewed.
The six days most Ghana trips are built around.
The capital, the canopy walkway, the elephants in the north, the gardens up the escarpment, the cocoa pods and the Ashanti capital. Start with the day you came for and work outwards.
The castles on Ghana’s Atlantic coast.
Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle stand on the shore about three hours west of Accra. Both hold the dungeons and the doorway through which captives were put onto ships. Most visits run as a long day from the capital, and many stop at the Assin Manso river on the way. Our reviews set out what each tour covers, how long the day runs and what it costs.
Guides at both castles work with school groups and returning families as well as visitors. Sites open daily; photography is restricted inside the dungeons.
Cape Coast and Elmina castle tours →Accra rewards the traveller who books a guide.
Makola at full volume, the Black Star Gate at the end of a wide empty avenue, waakye from a roadside pot, and a coastline that most itineraries drive straight past. A guided morning turns a confusing city into a walkable one.

What a day out in Ghana actually costs.
Every tour on the site, sorted by price. Ghana is not a cheap-tour destination once a driver and a long drive are involved, and the gap between a city morning and a northern safari is the whole story.
The full-day runs: Cape Coast and Elmina, Boti Falls and Aburi, Kumasi with a guide.

Ghana’s wildlife is real, and it is mostly in the parks.
Mole holds elephants, kob and warthog, and the walking safaris put you on the ground with a ranger rather than behind glass. Shai Hills is an easy hour from Accra for baboons and the plains below the cliffs. Wechiau, out west on the Black Volta, is hippo country. None of it is a day trip from the airport, and that is the point.
The canopy walkway is the best hour in the rainforest.
Seven rope-and-plank bridges strung between hardwoods, forty metres above the forest floor, with the canopy moving underneath you. Go early: the walkway is quiet before the coaches arrive and the forest is still making noise. Most Kakum trips pair it with a coastal day, but the park stands up on its own.
All Kakum trips (21) →Kente, cocoa and a Ghanaian kitchen.
Three things Ghana does that nowhere else does the same way, each of them a half day with someone who has done it their whole life.

Kente on the Loom
Kente is woven in narrow strips on a wooden loom, then stitched edge to edge into a cloth. Bonwire, half an hour out of Kumasi, is the village the Ashanti court has taken its cloth from for centuries. Patterns carry names and meanings, and a weaver will tell you which one you are watching. A strip takes hours; a full cloth takes weeks.

The Cocoa Pod
Ghana grows some of the best cocoa in the world and Tetteh Quarshie’s farm at Mampong is where the crop started, from pods carried home in 1876. On a farm visit somebody cuts a pod open in front of you: the beans come out wrapped in white pulp that tastes of lychee and nothing like chocolate. Fermenting and drying happen on mats by the road.

Jollof, Argued Over
Ghanaian jollof is cooked in the same pot as its stock so the rice takes the colour, and the debate with Nigeria over whose is better is genuinely unresolved. A class usually starts at the market picking out shito, kontomire and smoked fish, then runs through waakye, red-red or banku with tilapia in somebody’s kitchen.

Book these before you fly to Ghana.
Most of Accra can be arranged the night before from your hotel. These cannot: they run on long drives, fixed departures and families who need notice.
- 013 Days Grassroots Safari To MoleMole is a full day north of Accra. The multi-day safaris leave on set dates and the park lodges are small.
- 02The Ancestral Naming Ceremony and Home Coming ExperienceA naming ceremony is arranged with a family and an elder. It needs notice, not a same-day booking.
- 03Bonwire Namimg Ceremony and Kente Tourist CenterThe Bonwire weavers set up workshop days in advance; a loom is not a drop-in attraction.
- 042-Day Private Tour to the Mount Afadjato and Wli WaterfallsWli and Mount Afadjato sit on the Togo border, five hours out. The transport is booked ahead or it does not happen.
Ghana’s wet months are May to July, and they change the plan, not the trip.
The heavy rain usually falls in bursts rather than all day, with a second lighter run in September and October. Dirt roads to the falls turn slow, so the answers move indoors and into the city: a kitchen, a drum lesson, a market under cover, a long lunch. December to February brings the opposite problem, the harmattan blowing dust down from the Sahara and hazing every view.
